Efficient Removal of Dyes Present in Industrial Water Effluent using a Novel Polymeric Adsorbent Composite.

Industries such as textile refineries, paint, paper, varnishes, ink, plastics, pulp, cosmetics, tanneries, and food processing factories are major water users and generate large volumes of wastewater with colored organics, particularly dyes. Incineration is a conventional method for treating polymeric waste, but it is not a sustainable solution due to the production of harmful pollutants and high costs. Chemical recycling of polymeric waste to produce adsorbents has garnered much interest. This study focuses on the use of chemically recycled polymeric waste adsorbents for efficient removal of organic pollutants. For the first time, the potential of a novel polymeric adsorbent composite to absorb Methylene Blue (MB), Methyl Orange (MO), and Rhodamine B (RB) dyes was investigated. The study found that the adsorbent composite's optimal composition, run 14, contained 20% polystyrene (PS), 20% polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and 60% polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and had the highest adsorption capacity (mg/g). The surface structure of the adsorbent composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, which revealed its rough, highly porous, and defined structure surface morphologies, suitable for adsorption. The study also found that the adsorbent composite was more efficient in the removal of cationic dyes than anionic dyes. This work presents a promising solution for the removal of dyes from industrial water effluent, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to industrial wastewater treatment
